How Do I Use Sulfuric Acid as A Drain Cleaner?

Jan. 25, 2022

Unfortunately, my drain was clogged. I tried a wooden stick, a drain auger, baking soda and vinegar, but, all methods were unsuccessful. I just want to clean the drain quickly. What should I do? The answer was acid cleaners.

Sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid are the two acids plumbers and homeowners use to unclog drains. Sulfuric acid is the most effective one. To unclog a drain with sulfuric acid, slowly pour 200 ml into a slow-moving drain, turn on the cold water after 10 seconds, and check if the drain is clear. Please visit the XINLONGWEI website and buy the sulfuric acid you want, we are always here to answer your questions.

Safety measures

The advantage of using sulfuric acid as a drain cleaner is that it breaks down clogs very quickly (usually within a few seconds). When sulfuric acid is poured into a drain, it reacts quickly with the clog and gases such as sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide are formed during the process. These gases are toxic, so you need to pour the acid slowly, make sure the room is well ventilated and wear PPE.

If water is added to the sulfuric acid, heat will enter the acid, resulting in fumes, spattering and even boiling. Inhaled fumes are toxic, and splashes produce droplets that can cause skin burns.

It is also important to make sure that the acid is poured slowly. This keeps the amount of heat generated low while avoiding spills. Another thing to do is to make sure the room is well ventilated by opening windows and doors.

Steps for using sulfuric acid

Wear safety glasses and rubber gloves when cleaning drains with sulfuric acid.

Make sure the room is well ventilated. Open windows and doors to allow air to flow freely in and out.

Drain all standing water. If there is standing water in the sink or bathtub, use a cup to scoop it out.

For slow drains, slowly pour 200 ml of sulfuric acid cleaner down the drain.

If you have a heavy drain, slowly pour 500 ml of sulfuric acid cleaner directly into the drain opening.

It is important to turn your back to the drain when pouring sulfuric acid. You do not want to inhale the fumes.

Slowly turn on the cold water faucet after about 10 seconds to check that the clog is clear. Wait a few moments.

If the clog does not clear, add more sulfuric acid and wait up to an hour.

When the drain is finally cleared, spray it with water for one minute to flush out any sulfuric acid still in the pipe.

Pour in about ¼ cup of baking soda or borax to neutralize the acid still in the pipe.

Other methods

If you are dealing with a clogged bathroom or kitchen sink, there are any number of easy ways to remove the clog if you don't want to use sulfuric acid.

If you look under the sink, you will see the U-bend portion of the drain called a P-trap or drain trap. In most cases, your drain is running slow or clogged, and the clog is usually located in the P-trap. The good news is that you can easily remove the P-trap and clean it.

To prevent clogs, make it a habit to clean your drain with baking soda and vinegar at least once every two weeks. Avoid dumping fats, oils and grease, especially in kitchen drains.
